Job description

The Lower School nurse is responsible for providing basic health services for students in grades Preschool 3 through 5th Grade during the academic year. The nurse is responsible for maintaining all student health documentation. The Lower School nurse works closely with the Middle and Upper School nurses to provide full health care support for all members of the school community. The Lower School nurse is expected to be on campus from mid-August through mid-June.

The Lower School nurses office is located in the main Lower School building and is a vital member of the Lower School community. The nurse is often consulted by administration and the Lower School psychologist, as well as teachers.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition; maintain inventory and order first aid supplies as necessary; prepare and restock first aid kits for classrooms and field trips as assigned. Ensure medications are secured.
• Maintain student health records and accident reports including treatment records/logs, emergency cards, immunization records, handicap and allergy information, and hearing/vision screening to include computer data entry of information while assuring confidentiality at all times. Ensure all information is documented clearly, accurately, and legally.
• Receive and review student health files incoming from other schools; communicate with other schools as needed to clarify or obtain information as needed.
• Assure students have updated immunization records; review records of new students and notify students of follow-up shots; prepare letters or exclusion notices and notify parents and principal as appropriate. Track requests sent home, such as for immunization records.
• Screen for vision and hearing tests to determine visual acuity and puretone hearing. Designate those students who perform unsatisfactorily on the screening examinations to be re-examined by appropriate sources.
• Screen for head lice when necessary, to include distributing information to parents regarding treatment of affected students.
• Maintain professional standing through required continuing education to increase professional competence and to meet personal needs and goals.
• Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software; use a variety of medical equipment and instruments as assigned.
• Perform a variety of clerical duties; preparing injury reports and other reports, correspondence, forms, notices, and referrals; maintain files and duplicate materials as needed.

Knowledge of:
• Student health services related to injuries and illnesses.
• School policies, procedures and practices related to health issues, medical terminology and related activities.
• School policies and State regulations concerning immunization of school-aged children
• Hygiene and health needs of school-aged children
• Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws.
• School organization, operations, policies, and objectives.
• Public health agencies and local health care resources
• First Aid and age-appropriate CPR techniques.
• Health and safety regulations.
• Attendance procedures and related document preparation techniques.
• Modern office practices, procedures and equipment, including computer and relevant software
• Oral, written, and telephone communication skills.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Qualification and Skills:
• Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of New Jersey
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing or closely related field
• Detail oriented, meticulously organized and able to work independently
• Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and possessing some database experience
• Ability to write effectively and juggle multiple demands including frequent questions and phone calls from staff, parents, and students.
• Prior school nursing and/or working with adolescents is desirable
